Legal Fund to Stop Oshtemo Sewer Project

Donation protected
Contribute to a fund to stop an unfair Oshtemo Township sewer project. The Township is mandating WE, the current residents, pay for the project. The Township is overstepping its boundaries and trying to force us to take another personal loan to pay for their sewer infrastructure. We will also have to hire private companies to hook up our homes to the sewer system once it is complete. There has been no studies or research justifying the need for such a project. Our septic systems are in working condition and yet the Township mandates a system replacement.

Without the peoples’ consent, the Township made a unilateral decision to obligate this project on its homeowners. The Township has been misleading the public throughout its process with false information. The average cost for one home to execute the mandatory sewer hook-up will be around $20,000 when it is all complete. Oshtemo Township is also planning to raise our property tax as a result of the new sewer system. The true financial cost to the current resident is far beyond what the Township claims it will be.

We have used all the resources available urging them to reevaluate the project and the means to pay for it. Unfortunately, it seems like the Township has other political agendas and will not stop or postpone the project.

We are not necessarily opposed to a sewer system for homes currently using septic systems. We are opposed to funding that conversion by home-by-home charges and a mandatory hook-up.

Our next big step is to engage with a specialized law firm to help us challenge the Township and the legality of this project. We have done extensive research and interacted with many legal consultants and have found a team of experts that will provide strong representation for our claims. They have many years of experience of protecting taxpayers from the government overstepping their boundaries in similar situations.
We have causes of action to oppose the Township. There is merit to the argument that we are being improperly charged by the Township for connection to the sewer line, and we may have some defenses to these assessments that the Township plans on charging us.

We are asking everyone to donate so we can engage them as the project is about to start very SOON.

We know we have the community's support from our petition on  change.org and the Oshtemo Residents Against Township Sewer Project  group page on Facebook (to know more about us, see the Facebook page). The local media has also been supportive in bringing awareness to the public.

Sponsoring this fund will protect the community from the Township overreach. It will prevent fixed income families from losing their homes and elderly citizens from returning to work or relocating. Most importantly, we will not be in debt for another 30 years.

The Oshtemo Township act is not only unethical but also unAmerican and we will not settle for this injustice.

My name is Ayat Sleymann and I am a resident of Oshtemo Township and I live on Beech Avenue. I am one of YOU, your neighbor, impacted by the mandatory sewer project and the unfair assessment we have been given. The funds raised will be used to hire a law firm to challenge the sewer project.  With our donations, we plan on retaining a law firm and putting the funds collected towards all the legal fees.
