An incident EIGHT years ago was one of the deciding factors for my ex-husband receiving primary custody yesterday. After years of trying to keep a toxic situation together, I finally got the strength to leave the marriage. I was not confident in my safety moving across the country. A Domestic Violence Charge from a scratch and a push in self-defense is why my child has to move across the country, far away from all she's ever known; her family and her Michigan roots.

The DV Charge has loomed over me for years. Moving home to Michigan was the main result of the incident. I spent a lot of money removing the mugshot from the main pages of Google. Last academic year, the photo emerged(from parents and a Fraternity) and was passed around as a joke among students, which retraumatized me regarding my experience.

I share this because I've been secretly being strong and trying to heal from trauma for a minute(I have a therapist). Defending myself has been difficult, and I never wanted anyone else to experience going to jail. I shy away from protests and demonstrations due to this emotional trigger. I worked with a Domestic Violence Organization to plan my escape but didn't have to totally execute the items. A career opportunity emerged with financial freedom, temporary housing, money for a downpayment AND Tuition Remission- so, of course, I took it. Being an ambitious woman who can build a genuine network is being punished.

Please note that this was very difficult to write and put in the universe. As a caregiver, I've had to learn and accept people providing support. If you want to know how to help, a few dollars could go a long way. Also, be aware that follow-up questions can also be traumatic.
