Legacy 90.1FM Community Projects

Legacy 90.1FM is a community radio station based in Manchester that plays Music of Black origin, mainly from Africa and the Caribbean.

One of our most important functions is to provide a platform for Black voices to be heard and for talented Black people, especially young Black people starting their careers in the industry, to reach their audiences.

Community radio stations, like everyone else, suffered during the pandemic and are now feeling the full impact of the cost of living crisis.

In November 2021 we broadcast a series of 11 programmes 'Let's Talk' encouraging people to talk about the impact of Covid on their lives. They told us that the radio kept them company, especially people who had to spend a lot of time on their own and they told us that their mental health suffered.

We ran a Go Fund Me project 'Love Legacy - Recovery Campaign' which raised £4127. The generosity of donors contributed to the Let's Talk project and kept the station going at a difficult time.

We want to follow on from Let's Talk with a series of community shows that give people advice and information that will help them cope with the cost of living crisis and the difficult times we are all experiencing. High energy costs have affected all of us but some people have coped better than others. We want to help those who have struggled to cope and will struggle to recover.

We want to hear young people's voices and hear how the political, social and economic upheaval of the past three years has affected them. We think it is time Legacy 90.1FM hosted a youth show, where young people can listen to the music they enjoy and talk about the issues that are important to them.

We want to bring young and old together to talk about their experiences across the generations. Older people have lived through difficult times before and can support young families by sharing the tricks and tips they used to survive then.

This time we are not asking you to donate individually; we are asking you to raise money in ways that bring people together - the word cloud in this image should give you a few ideas. Have fun raising funds to donate to our Community Project campaign and donate either the whole proceeds, a percentage or a fixed donation. Giving us a percentage or a fixed donation means you get to keep some of the money raised to use for your next get-together!

Bearing in mind the rising costs we are all living with, we think this is the best way for you to raise money for us. It doesn't matter if it's the smallest of coffee mornings or the largest of auction events. We just want people to come together and socialise while they raise money to support the most vulnerable in our communities.
