Lee's Direct to Source Funding
I've thought about applying for aid work a few years ago but so many organisations wanted 2k for me to give up my time to volunteer so some snotty types can drive round in land cruisers claiming sainthood & 10% at best goes to the actual needy.
Every year I go on a trip & this time I had the idea of handing out first aid kits which a dozen odd of my friends kindly donated many different items. It quickly gathered momentum & before I knew it I'd 5kilos of medical kit with my allready bursting rugsack. I set off on Jan 2nd with the intention of donating them from Alexandria to Cape Town & return Feb 18th. I befriend a hotel porters, taxi drivers or guides & ask them to take me to a really poor area and with the help of a pastor or neighbour I go all in armed with all round vision & sweets !!
It dawned on me early that it's a nice thing to have but seriously it's not the kind of thing you want to use. Straight away I decided to buy them essentials like long life milk, maize, sugar, oil, bread, toothbrushes etc and people's faces lit up.
I sit in their 1 or 2 bed huts & asked them about their lives. I listened to their stories & it's wobbled me. I decided then to give them a months rent, help with medicine and wow, my friends have been great. I'd hate to be accused of wrong doing & every penny donated goes to the needy but lets tidy it all up & put the donations into some form of structure. I'm not trying to save Africa or any of that bollox but if my friends & I can help a few families turn day to day survival to month to month well why not? High 5's & ear to ear smiles are a priceless way of knowing we helped.
I collect contact details so this can carry on after my return to our "don't know we're born" western lifestyle & I also post pictures & updates on how it's all going.
Whatever you can donate from £1 up I can guarantee every penny will get to source.
Thank you for your kindness & huge thanks to Paul Nicholson for setting up the gofundme page on my behalf whilst I was in the middle of nowhere
