Hello! We are the Semilla Collective. We are working towards a dream and we ask for the support of our community to finally make possible a cooperative tortilleria for immigrants here in New Haven, CT. After years of work, we are in the early stages of opening this cooperative, and our success will be possible with your solidarity and contributions.

Hola! Somos el Colectivo Semilla. Estamos construyendo un sueño y pedimos apoyo de nuestra comunidad para finalmente hacer realidad una tortillería cooperativa de inmigrantes aquí en New Haven, CT. Después de años de trabajo, nos encontramos en la etapa de apertura de este cooperativo, y nuestro éxito será posible con su solidaridad y contribuciones.

THE STORY OF THIS PROJECT / LA HISTORIA DE ESTE PROYECTO

The Semilla Collective of New Haven was formed in the fall of 2019 with a diverse group of people willing to fight for social and economic justice in our community. During the pandemic, the Semilla Collective joined efforts to create mutual aid networks that allowed us to stand in solidarity with our immigrant community by providing food to families who were excluded from state or federal aid because of their immigration status. We distributed more than $300,000 in food and cash to working families. In the spirit of creating alternative economies, we had many conversations about a project that would be sustainable while respecting equal relations between those who receive help and those who give it.

El Colectivo Semilla de New Haven se formó en el otoño de 2019 con un diverso grupo de gente dispuesta a luchar por justicia social y económica en nuestra comunidad. Durante la pandemia, el Colectivo Semilla se unió a los esfuerzos para crear redes de ayuda mutua que nos permitió solidarizarnos con nuestra comunidad inmigrante proveyendo alimento a familias que fueron excluidas de la ayuda estatal o federal por su estatus migratorio. Repartimos entre las familias trabajadoras más de 300 mil dólares en comida y dinero en efectivo. En el espíritu de crear economías alternativas, tuvimos muchas conversaciones sobre un proyecto que fuese sustentable respetando las relaciones de igualdad entre quien recibe ayuda y quien la da.

THE TORTILLERIA SEMILLA / LA TORTILLERIA SEMILLA

The Tortillería Semilla arose as a project of the Semilla Collective in response to the need for jobs where labor rights, diverse skills and life experiences are respected. We saw that no establishment in New Haven offers freshly made tortillas, made traditionally using nixtamalization and high-quality ingredients. Our mission is to provide corn tortillas, rescuing our culture and traditions. We aim to create dignified jobs in our cooperative and inspire others with solidarity; together we walk toward a better world.

La Tortillería Semilla surgió como un proyecto del Colectivo Semilla en respuesta a la necesidad de trabajos donde se respeten los derechos laborales, las diferentes habilidades y experiencias de vida. Vimos que no existe ningún establecimiento en New Haven que ofrezca tortillas recién hechas, elaboradas de forma tradicional utilizando el proceso de nixtamalización e ingredientes de alta calidad. Nuestra misión es ofrecer tortillas de maíz, rescatando la cultura y las tradiciones. Creamos trabajos dignos en nuestra cooperativa e inspiramos a otros con solidaridad; caminamos juntos a un mundo mejor.

WHO ARE WE / QUIENES SOMOS

We are a group of immigrants from the Semilla Collective who come with a dream of improving our lives and our community. Before the tortilla factory, we worked cleaning houses, cooking in restaurants, and on assembly lines in factories that exploit their workers, leaving our families far away while earning the minimum wage. We didn't even have time to imagine something different, but now we have created the opportunity to dream together to make a better future come true.

We are Elizabeth, originally from the state of Zacatelco Tlaxcala, Mexico, Anabel from Tamaulipas, Mexico, Javi from Oaxaca, a member of the Valley Zapotec Nation, Martina from San Marcos, Guatemala. The owner-workers have the support of an advisory board of compañeros from the Semilla Collective. This project is a part of the Semilla Collective. Our fiscal sponsor United Way will be the recipient of your generous donation and the Semilla Collective will reserve all the funds raised through this GoFundMe to support our Tortilleria Semilla project.

Somos un grupo de inmigrantes del Colectivo Semilla que venimos con un sueño de mejorar nuestras vidas y nuestra comunidad. Antes de la tortillería trabajamos limpiando casas, cocinando en restaurantes, en líneas de ensamble en fábricas que explotan a sus empleados, dejando nuestras familias lejos mientras ganábamos el salario mínimo. Ni siquiera teníamos tiempo de imaginar algo distinto, pero ahora hemos creado la oportunidad de soñar juntos para hacer realidad un futuro mejor.

Somos: Elizabeth, originaria del estado de Zacatelco Tlaxcala, México, Anabel de Tamaulipas, México, Javi de Oaxaca, miembro de la Nación Zapoteca del Valle, Martina originaria de San Marcos, Guatemala. Los dueños-trabajadores cuentan con el apoyo de una mesa de consejo formada por compañeros del Colectivo Semilla. Este proyecto es parte del Colectivo Semilla. Nuestro patrocinador fiscal United Way será el destinatario de su generosa donación y el Colectivo Semilla reservará todos los fondos recaudados a través de este GoFundMe para apoyar nuestro proyecto la Tortilleria Semilla.

Update: On 2/28/23 Martina Perez made the decision to leave the Tortilleria Semilla Co-op project, we respect her decision, today 01/3/23 we are only 3 worker owners of this cooperative project: Elizabeth Gonzalez, Javier Villatoro and Anabel Hernandez.

After this date we will not use more photos or the name of the ex-coworker.

Actualizacion: El dia 2/28/23 Martina Perez tomó la decision de salir del proyecto de la Tortilleria Semilla Co-op, respetamos sus decision, hoy 3/01/23 somos solamente 3 dueños trabajadores de este proyecto cooperativo: Elizabeth Gonzalez, Javier Villatoro y Anabel Hernandez.

Apartir de esta fecha no usaremos mas fotos ni el nombre de la excompañera.

HOW ARE WE GOING TO BENEFIT OUR COMMUNITY?/ ¿CÓMO VAMOS A BENEFICIAR A NUESTRA COMUNIDAD?

Once our cooperative is open, independent and sustainable, we dream, like the seeds we are, of planting and incubating other worker cooperatives. We want to inspire and support other community members to take the initiative to create dignified jobs for themselves.

We also hope to use this fundraiser to lower the cost of tortillas to make them sustainable, and to donate food to those in need.

Una vez que nuestro cooperative esté abierto, independiente y sostenible, soñamos, como semillas que somos, sembrar e incubar otras cooperativas de trabajadores. Queremos apoyar e inspirar a los miembros de nuestra comunidad para que tomen la iniciativa de crear trabajos dignos.

También esperamos usar esta recaudación de fondos para bajar el costo de las tortillas para que sean sostenibles y poder donar alimentos a los que necesitan.
