On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 60 hours. 124 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2015, a 4 percent increase from 2014, 6 of those were from California. 18 officers have been killed so far in 2016. More than 20,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice*.
Founded in 1984, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is dedicated to honoring and remembering the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers in the United States. The mission of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is to generate increased public support for the law enforcement profession by permanently recording and appropriately commemorating the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers; and to provide information that will help promote law enforcement safety. The Memorial Fund is a principal organizer of the National Police Week observance each May.
The mission of the Police Unity Tour is to raise awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty and to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial and Museum in Washington D.C. Every year during the National Police Week, PUT chapters from all over the country sponsor bicycle rides that all converge at the memorial on May 12th. Their mission is beautifully stated by the motto:
“WE RIDE FOR THOSE WHO DIED”
This year the Southern California chapter of the PUT will have more than 300 riders starting in Somerset, New Jersey and riding 225 miles over 3 days to Washington. During the ride the Los Angeles Police Department will be providing a motorcycle escort to ensure the safety of the riders. Check out the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDx79nwK81w for a recap of the 2015 tour. The reserve motors pioneered this event for the department in 2009 and have participated in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The dedication of the riders and the subsequent events held during the National Police Week are truly moving.
The logistics of transporting motorcycles across the country and housing the officers during the ride are complex and expensive. The 2015 motor detail can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qURYwI6pVBI entering the memorial at the end of the tour.
I am asking for your support in raising the Funds needed for this event. Donations in any amount are appreciated and can be made at gofundme.com/LAPDReserveMotors, or payable by check to the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation (send checks to: c/o Ortiz Bros. 141 W.
