Help Stock La Nevera 183 Community Fridge!
La Nevera 183 is a community fridge that is located on 183rd and Audubon in Washington Heights, NYC.
Our fridge is set up in public, with power provided by the corner bodega, Marte Grocery. It remains accessible at all times in order to give direct access to free food to anyone who needs it. At La Nevera 183, you are welcome to take the food you need and give what you can in support of the community.
This is solidarity, not charity. We are a mutual aid organization formed by members of the community, inviting all to participate.
La Nevera 183 was created to fill a need for free and accessible food. One in four of our Washington Heights neighbors is experiencing or has experienced food insecurity in the last year. No one deserves to go hungry, and we hope as a community we can help fill this need. We have seen the success of community fridges and know that this endeavor is one way that we can take care of one another.
For many costs of the fridge, including maintenance, painting, cleaning, etc. we have been able to have members of the community donate their time to provide these services. Additionally, we have a growing list of participants and businesses in the community to donate food regularly to the fridge.
However, even with the immense amount of donations, it is still a struggle to keep the fridge stocked at all times since the need is so high.
This is why your donation is also needed. It is another way to ensure that La Nevera 183 serves its purpose to provide accessible food.
All donations to this GoFundMe campaign will go directly to the stocking and maintenance of the fridge. The funds will be used to purchase food to stock the fridge when empty, for cleaning supplies to regularly clean the refrigerator, and to pay for any maintenance services that we cannot get donated.
The more resources we have, the more we can ensure that no one in need who opens our fridge will find it empty. Our goal is for the fridge to stay stocked as often as possible and serve all the need that it can.
Thank you for participating in La Nevera 183!
