Many of you have asked us how to support Puerto Rico during its time of crisis.
The best way is to lift up the archipelago through your donations.
WHY ARE WE FUNDRAISING?
In Puerto Rico, there’s a saying that goes, “Solo El Pueblo Salva Al Pueblo,” which roughly translates to, “Only the People Save the People.” It’s the people who come through and show up for each other every time, who chart paths towards just futures. The documentary LANDFALL portrays everyday life in post-Hurricane María Puerto Rico, showcasing the importance of community-led, grassroots recoveries. We believe that a just recovery is only just if it’s led by and for the people at the bottom. Solidarity is about reciprocity. And we ask for your reciprocity now.
Unfortunately for Puerto Rico, the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated compounding crises: a $72-billion illegal debt, a category 5 hurricane, earthquakes, and more. These events have unleashed a wave of crippling austerity measures resulting in the closure of hundreds of schools, a crumbling healthcare system, and increasing waves of migration. As LANDFALL Director Cecilia Aldarondo puts it: “If the US has a cold right now, Puerto Rico has pneumonia.”
Right now, Puerto Rico ranks dead last in vaccination rates in the US. Meanwhile, wealthy transplants like crypto-colonialist Brock Pierce and YouTubers the Paul brothers are accelerating their moves to the colony, driving up cost of living and creating a new apartheid for Puerto Ricans who do not want to leave. This situation cannot continue---and we ask you to help us stop it.
WHO WILL WE GIVE THE MONEY TO?
We believe firmly in uplifting the work of those who know the crisis inside out. So we have selected a list of ten frontline initiatives in Puerto Rico that we feel are global leaders in community recovery and mutual aid. The following Puerto Rico-based initiatives practice and build solidarity on a daily basis across an array of sectors, including food projects, housing justice, queer liberation and women’s rights, and art collectives. They represent Puerto Rico’s geographical, racial, and gendered diversities, from Vieques to Mayagüez. LANDFALL is aiming to fundraise $50,000 to give each initiative $5,000, and reciprocate the solidarity they give every day.

WHO ARE WE?
This fundraiser was developed in close collaboration between LANDFALL Director Cecilia Aldarondo, a diasporic Puerto Rican based in New York, and LANDFALL’s Impact Producer Ana Portnoy Brimmer, a Puerto Rico-based activist, with input from Puerto Rico-based Associate Producer and activist Lale Namerrow Pastor. We designed this fundraiser from our accumulated experiences in Puerto Rican activism and the production of the film.

ABOUT LANDFALL:
Through shard-like glimpses of everyday life in post-Hurricane María Puerto Rico, LANDFALL is a cautionary tale for our times. Set against the backdrop of protests that toppled the US colony’s governor in 2019, the film offers a prismatic portrait of collective trauma and resistance. While the devastation of María attracted a great deal of media coverage, the world has paid far less attention to the storm that preceded it: a 72-billion-dollar debt crisis crippling Puerto Rico well before the winds and waters hit. LANDFALL examines the kinship of these two storms—one environmental, the other economic—juxtaposing competing utopian visions of recovery. Featuring intimate encounters with Puerto Ricans as well as the newcomers flooding the island, LANDFALL reflects on a question of contemporary global relevance: when the world falls apart, who do we become?

¿POR QUÉ ESTAMOS RECAUDANDO FONDOS?
En Puerto Rico hay un dicho que dice, “Solo El Pueblo Salva Al Pueblo.” Es el pueblo el que siempre da la cara y se apoya mutuamente todo los días, que traza caminos hacia futurxs justxs. El documental LANDFALL ofrece un retrato del diario vivir en Puerto Rico pos-Huracán María, resaltando la importancia de recuperaciones comunitarias y de base. Nosotrxs creemos que una recuperación justa solo es justa si es dirigida para y por la gente desde abajo. La solidaridad se trata de reciprocidad. Y les pedimos su reciprocidad ahora.
Desafortunadamente para Puerto Rico, la pandemia del COVID-19 solo ha exacerbado crisis acumuladas: una deuda ilegal de $72 mil millones, un huracán categoría 5, terremotos y mucho más. Estos eventos han desatado una oleada de medidas de austeridad devastadoras resultando en la clausura masiva de cientos de escuelas, un sistema de salud en deterioro y hordas migratorias crecientes. Como la directora de LANDFALL Cecilia Aldarondo dice: “Si los EU tiene una gripa, Puerto Rico tiene neumonía.”
Ahora mismo, Puerto Rico ocupa el último lugar en las tasas de vacunación en los EU. Mientras tanto, trasplantes adinerados como el cripto-colonialista Brock Pierce y los hermanos YouTubers Paul están acelerando su reubicación a la colonia, aumentando el costo de vida y creando un nuevo apartheid para lxs Puertorriqueñxs que no se quieren ir. Esta situación no puede continuar---y les pedimos que nos ayuden a ponerle un alto.
¿A QUIÉNES LE DAREMOS LOS FONDOS RECAUDADOS?
Nosotrxs creemos firmemente en elevar el trabajo de aquellxs que conocen la crisis de adentro hacia afuera. Así que hemos compilado una lista de diez iniciativas de primera línea en Puerto Rico que creemos que son líderes globales en recuperación comunitaria y apoyo mutuo. Las siguientes iniciativas basadas en Puerto Rico practican y construyen solidaridad en el día a día a través de una variedad de sectores, incluyendo proyectos de soberanía alimentaria, vivienda digna, liberación cuir y derechos de la mujer, y colectivxs artísticxs. Representan las diversidades geográficas, raciales y de género de Puerto Rico, desde Vieques a Mayagüez. LANDFALL tiene como meta recaudar $50,000 para darle $5,000 a cada iniciativa, y corresponder con reciprocidad la solidaridad que dan cada día.
