Meet Lairon. Lairon is a 16 year old boy from Port de Paix, Haiti who was referred to the STAND clinic for a wound on his ankle. He had a bug bite that became infected and his mother spent what little money they had on a surgery to cure the infection. Unfortunatly, the surgery failed and the infection progressed to his ankle and shin bones. Lairon needs to have another surgery to remove the infected bone or the infection could spread to the rest of his body and kill him.
Lairon is one of 6 children to a single mother. His father recently passed away and, because of this, the family has been moving from town to town living on the floor of other family members homes to keep a roof over their heads. His mother used to sell candies in town and his father worked construction; however, since Lairon’s father died and his mother spent what little money they had on a failed surgery, his mother cannot even afford to purchase the candies to sell.
Despite all of this, Lairon remains a happy and cheerful kid. He is shy, but very sweet and has an infectious smile that goes on for days. He cannot bear weight through his ankle because his bones are so fragile from the infection, but he loves to chat about soccer and playing cards. Since Lairon’s mother cannot afford to send him to school he spends most of his free time playing cards with his cousins and watching his friends play soccer. Lairon wants to get back to playing soccer again and a surgery could make that happen.
Through the hard work of STAND founders Justin and Morgan we have found a doctor to perform this life saving surgery on Lairon’s ankle; however, it is not cheap! Please consider donating to help save Lairon’s life.
