Hi! My name is Susie Silberfarb and I am a sophomore at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. My goal is to study medicine and work in healthcare like my parents. My father is a doctor and my mother is a nurse. My mother always had a passion to take care of newborn babies, and at 48 years old just finished nursing school in December and is now working full time in postpartum, in a not-for-profit hospital in Broward County Florida. She came home one day from work and told me that she had a conversation with one of her new nurse friends in her department and how that friend couldn’t afford to send her child to summer camp. Growing up I was lucky enough to go to sleep-away camp in the northeast for years, so hearing this broke my heart. These ladies who have embraced my mom in her new venture can’t afford to send their kids to local community day camps.
Everything about my mom becoming a nurse is great except the fact that she’s not home at all for about half the week now. My siblings and I are older and independent now but I can’t imagine how the young kids feel being home all summer without their moms being there from 7 am to 7 pm. I see how hard my mom works and I hear stories of her day and I can’t believe it. Nurses tackle so much in a day and are not rewarded enough for it.
It’s tough being at home all day all summer without your mom there. This summer, I took two virtual classes so I was sitting at home working all day, and I was so lonely. It kills me to know that there are little kids who experience this feeling without even having a class to occupy them. My goal is to raise enough money so that these children can attend day camps within their communities for at least a few weeks next summer. I want these children to have the opportunity to make new friends, try new things, and create memories that will last a lifetime, just like I did at camp. Please give what you can to help me achieve my goal!
