Hi, we are a group of professors and friends of Kyla Kelsey, a masters student in the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba who passed away on May 24, 2025. Kyla was a vibrant spirit who loved music, history, laughter, and living life to the fullest. Her energy was contagious, and her love for her kids, family, and friends was endless. While raising her three children as a single mother, Kyla was also pursuing her own dreams, returning to university at age 37, completing an undergraduate degree in music, and working on her masters in music research with the goal of becoming a university instructor. Unfortunately, her promising future was cut short by an aggressive form of ovarian cancer. We are now raising money to honour Kyla's memory by helping to support her children. Elliot, age 20, is starting his 4th year of a bachelor's degree in anthropology at the University of Manitoba; Iris, age 18, is going into her 2nd year at the U of M, pursuing animal science with the goal of becoming a large animal veterinarian; and Addie, age 16, is finishing her last year of high school, with a love for art and creativity and a dream of working in animation. Given Kyla's devotion to and love for both her family and the pursuit of education, we can think of no better way of honouring her memory than to support her children on their own educational journeys. The money raised will go towards living and educational expenses so these three exceptional young people can fully realize their own dreams.
