Kristof's Eagle Project for the Morgan Hill CRC
Donation protected
My name is Kristof Sochan, and I am a 17-year-old Boy Scout in Troop 730 in Morgan Hill, California.
In February of this year, I began my work planning the construction of two pergolas, or shading structures, on either side of the bocce ball court outside of the Senior Center at the Morgan Hill Centennial Recreation Center (CRC). The Morgan Hill CRC is a community center that provides athletic and other community programs to local residents. Outside of the Senior Center of the CRC is a bocce ball court that was gifted by the Morgan Hill Rotary Club in June of 2014.

This project provides a solution to a problem of the bocce ball court becoming too hot for seniors to use the court, as it is located on a cement patio in direct sunlight. The construction of these two pergolas would greatly increase the usability of this court.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and a resulting city budget deficit, the CRC cut the funding for my Eagle Scout service project. This news came as a huge disappointment to me. Not only was I was excited to be able to give back to a community center that has served me throughout my childhood, but it posed a great barrier to the timeline of my Eagle Project that I must finish before I turn 18 in September. Optimistic to see the project through, I have turned to my local community, friends, and family, to fund this project that will be very beneficial to the CRC and its members for many years to come.
A generous donor has pledged to match donations dollar for dollar up to $1,400. The funds will primarily go towards the materials needed for the two pergolas, such as wood and other hardware. A small portion of the budget is dedicated to tools and supplies including hand sanitizer and masks for those who will be helping me construct the pergolas.

Due to the approaching deadline of my 18th birthday, I am planning to begin construction on the week starting Sunday, August 9th. My goal is to finish the fundraising for the project by July 31.
I look forward to seeing this project come to fruition after encountering so many hurdles. For the detailed project proposal I submitted to my troop, my Boy Scout council, and the city of Morgan Hill, please feel free to look at this document.
