Kristen Thompson's medical and family expenses

My family was involved in a severe vehicle accident the morning of August 13, 2023 while on our way to Bethel Church.

We were broadsided by a pickup truck while turning from Hwy 26 onto Hwy 102. The impact caused our minivan to become airborne and landed in the ditch about 40 ft from where we were turning.

I turned around to check for injuries, everone was alive. As soon as I unbuckeled, I was able to get our two boys, ages 7 and 16, out of the vehicle. When I went to get Kristen out of the rear passenger seat, she said she couldn't feel her legs and she was in an extreme pain.

I called 911 to report the accident and requested medical transport. When Acadian Ambulance arrived, local firefighters cut open the rear door so Kristen could be extracted.

Worried that she had a broken spine, she was airlifted to Lafayette General Hospital within 15 minutes. My mother in law brought the boys to Jennings American Legion to be checked out, and thankfully they did not have any serious injuries.

The ER doctors at Lafayette General determined that Kristen had a broken hip, fractured pelvis, and broken femur. For the next few hours, she underwent emergency surgery where the doctors were able to repair her right hip.

Dr. Saul spoke with me and my mother in law to give us an update after the surgery. He said she needed a hip replacement, but being so young, that he wanted to try and save her hip instead. She will probably need a hip replacement later, but for now we are hoping that she heals.

We have more than the minimum car insurance. Kristen's surgery and hospital stay has exceeded $50,000 already which is greater than what USAA will pay.

I've never been one to ask for help. I am now. This is my family I need help for. Once released, Kristen will be going to a rehab facility for several weeks until she can come home.

We still need your thoughts and prayers. The Lord was with us that morning, because the outcome could have been so much worse. Thank you to everyone who reached out and said to ask for help.
