SAVE ASBURY'S WATERFRONT LEGAL DEFENSE FUND
In October, when iStar demolished our boardwalk on the north end of Asbury Park to make way for a
more private feeling meandering pathway, thousands of us signed a petition and hundreds stormed the
City Council meeting. We demanded that our historic boardwalk be replaced. And, by rallying and
raising our voices, WE WON!
But, the battle to keep Asbury’s Waterfront for everyone is not over! We need your help!
Asbury Park's waterfront developer, iStar Financial Inc., submitted to the AP Planning Board its plans for
a private beach club to be located East of Ocean Avenue, between 6th-7th. We can’t let that happen.
Save Asbury’s Waterfront (SAW) has retained an environmental attorney, Stuart Lieberman of
Lieberman & Blecher. We believe we have a strong case and that our efforts to demand appropriate
development will enhance and strengthen Asbury Park's waterfront for CURRENT & FUTURE
GENERATIONS! However, your financial support to defend the waterfront is critical.
The immediate need is to pay for legal and professional fees related to defending our coastline. We set a
goal to raise $30,000. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated and will go a long way
towards ensuring a beach and boardwalk for all in Asbury Park!
HOW LEGAL COUNSEL & OTHER PROFESSIONALS WILL BE PAID: Our lawyer and other professionals such as the environmental engineer we've hired (Rippled Waters Engineering LLC) and planner (Design Solutions LLC) send us monthly invoices for services incurred. We intend to pay these invoices 1) writing a personal check directly to the professional to cover the cost of the invoice; 2) will withdraw money from this GoFundMe account directly into the personal account to cover the amount of the check written. REASONS TO OPPOSE THE BEACH CLUB:
1) ENVIRONMENTAL: We believe it is irresponsible, in the face of climate change and rising sea levels, to
build in a FEMA VE Zone (flood zone subject to high velocity water).
The CAFRA permit from NJ Dept. of Environmental Protection that authorizes this club to be built was
issued in 2004, and the permit is based on 1983 flood maps. We advocate for NO NEW development EAST of Ocean Avenue!
2) SOCIAL / CULTURAL: Asbury Park has undergone tremendous change since the Waterfront
Redevelopment Plan (WRP) began in 2002; still, 30% of the city's population is below the poverty level.
We believe building a private beach club alongside the public boardwalk and beach, an amenity that will
serve only the few who can afford it, is inappropriate.
Asbury Park is INCLUSIVE and progressive. We are an engaged community, and we welcome EVERYONE
to enjoy our beach and our city. We believe a private beach club represents EXCLUSION and does not
belong in Asbury Park. We advocate for a beach & boardwalk for ALL!

We seek to foster and encourage appropriate development along Asbury Park's Waterfront.
That development will:
1. Maximize social inclusion and provide access for all residents and visitors
2. Recognize current coastal development guidelines and practices
3. Be sensitive to wildlife habitats, pollution and other environmental concerns
4. Be transparent during all phases of planning and implementation
We are concerned and engaged residents who want to SAVE ASBURY'S WATERFRONT (SAW)! We want
our city’s governing body and developers to modernize the Waterfront Redevelopment Plan to meet the
needs of Asbury Park’s present and future!
