Mambo? Habari gani?
Hello everyone, our names are Andi Utter and Brandi Taylor, we are Fulbright English teachers in Kwale County, Kenya. In our school and the rural areas across Kenya it is costly and difficult for girls to afford sanitary pads. Most girls will miss class for a week at a time staying home due to a lack of sanitary items. Some will put dangerous substitutes in their underwear to be able to go out (like cow dung, ashes, paper trash, goat hide, or leaves/grass); others will 'befriend' male friends in exchange for money for those materials or end up dropping out of school entirely. This is not a recipe for educational success! One of the most direct ways to reduce poverty in this region is to ensure girls universally finish their secondary school education. This project aims to provide supplies and training so our Kombani Secondary School girls will learn about menstrual health hygiene and how to make their own reusable cloth sanitary pads. The money fundraised will purchase two sewing machines, needles, thread, cloth, and other training materials for the girls. While our starting goal is $1,000 this project has the potential to impact more than just the girls of Kombani Secondary School. The grand goal is to spread this project to multiple schools in Kwale County, and with your help we can make it happen.
