It is with heavy hearts that we come together to honour the life of Ben Rao, who we sadly lost at the young age of 30 years old.
As many of you will know, Ben spent some months in Sri Lanka from November 2024 which included living and volunteering in Arklow boys home in Katana. The home accommodates 36 boys aging from 5 to 16 years of age, all under the care of Mallika Fernando who dedicates her life to them. Ben only had the highest praise for Mallika, who took him under her wing and supported him like a son throughout his time there. Mallika is supported by Roy and his wife Dulakshi who Ben forged strong and supportive friendships with.
Ben was very fond of the boys who live here, and proud of their achievements despite difficult circumstances that had led them to the home. From film nights to playing cricket and football Ben enjoyed spending time with and encouraging the boys outside of their school day. Ben was particularly proud of his role as Father Christmas partying with the Arklow Boys Home family.
In lieu of flowers at the funeral, we believe it would be Bens wish for donations to go towards this home, to help provide essential resources such as school uniforms, classroom supplies and sports equipment.
