This year I’m taking on the Kiltwalk to raise money for Men Matter Scotland — a charity that means a lot to me personally.

When I was 10 years old, my dad took his own life. It’s something that’s stayed with me my whole life, and it’s a big part of why this charity appealed so much to me, Because if charities like this existed or had more awareness back then, he may have got the help that he needed and could still be with us today.

Over the years, I’ve had my own struggles with mental health as well. Like a lot of men, I kept things to myself more than I should have, tried to just get on with it and not really talk about how I was feeling. From the outside everything can look fine, but that’s not always the reality.

Losing my dad showed me just how serious mental health can be, and how important it is that men have somewhere to turn, someone to talk to, and the support they need before things get to that point.

That’s exactly why charities like Men Matter Scotland are so important. They give men a place to open up, get support, and realise they’re not alone.

That’s why I’m doing this. Not just for the challenge, but to try and make a difference — even in a small way.

I’ve actually been to the Men Matter Scotland building and was given a tour by two of the volunteers, who are also members of the charity. They showed me the space where they do their fantastic work and shared the story of how the charity started and grew into what it is today — and it really stuck with me.
