Hi, I'm Tom Keenan and I am raising funds to meet initial costs of a full scoping and costing to preserve the ancient Kilmory Chapel and Graveyard. The Kilmory Cruisle Project (KCP), a community initiative, operating as confirmed project of Arisaig Community Trust (ACT), seeks to restore, improve and maintain Kilmory Old Chapel and Graveyard in Arisaig Recently, in 2024, an update of records of the grave inscriptions on the old graveyard and crùisle was conducted. This required inspection of all the gravestones, thereby updating and adding new interments and inscriptions since the initial records. In this effort, it was clear that there had been a marked deterioration in the old graveyard from when the 2002 gravestone inscriptions were recorded. Many gravestones and graves were either indiscernible or overgrown to the point inscriptions are difficult to read or graves difficult to find because they are either covered over by moss or bushes. From photographs of grave slabs in the old chapel taken by Canmore in 1983 and by current visual inspection it is clear that the ancient grave slabs are also, because they are exposed to the weather, showing signs of deterioration, so much so very important historical markings are becoming difficult to make out. This confirms there is an urgent need to protect and manage this significant historical, religious, and cultural site. Without restorative action, many artifacts of important Highland heritage may be lost forever. This money will fund a full scoping and architects report with which to make a full application for Historic Scotland funding.
