Kilimanjaro Climb to Fund Cancer Research

Tax deductible
Cancer is everywhere. In 2016, there were an estimated 15,338,988 people living with cancer in the US. In 2018 alone, an estimated 1,735,350 new cancer cases were diagnosed in this country. This terrible disease is the 2nd most common cause of death in the US - taking the lives of 1,660 people every day.  Without question, cancer has impacted everyone in some way.

MY STORY

In December 2018, my world was turned upside down when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. The five short months that followed were the most challenging in my life. My family and I stood by my dad’s side as he endured countless doctor’s appointments, lengthy hospital stays, taxing treatments and difficult surgeries.

My dad was a light – there’s no other way to put it. His unique combination of humor, generosity and warmth is and will always be irreplaceable. He had a way of making everyone he met feel like the most important person in the world because he was truly interested. He cared about you and about helping you to be the best person you could be. Even during his treatments, he was his truest self. Not once did the conversation shift to his pain or struggles, but instead he continued to be genuinely interested in the lives of others.

After seeing his strength throughout his battle, it has become my mission to find a cure. To make him proud. To put my mind, body and spirit to the test the way he did, and the way others do every day. All with the hopes that we will one day reach a point where no other person needs to endure the pain that cancer inevitably brings.

OUR GOAL

That’s why this February, Derek and I will be embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to honor my dad and all of those who have been impacted by this unforgiving disease. Together, we will be hiking Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Over the course of 7 days, we will hike an average of 7 hours per day and will be faced with varied terrain, freezing temperatures and low oxygen levels, all in an attempt to reach the summit at 19,341 feet.

With every difficult step beyond the clouds, we’ll draw strength from those who have been impacted by cancer and hope to inspire those who are fighting their own battle today. This journey is to honor my dad, Bill Pennella, and is on behalf every patient, every survivor, and every family member or friend who has been impacted by cancer. With your generous donations to the Cancer Research Institute, will be one step closer to finding a cure. All donations will go directly to this foundation, whose mission is to save more lives by fueling the discovery and development of powerful immunotherapies for all types of cancer.

Thanks to the support of my employer, Inspira Marketing Group, I have been provided this unique opportunity to give back to a cause that is near and dear to my heart. My company empowers all employees to identify their passions and to truly make a difference in this world.
