Kids with Autism Community Project

This fundraiser is to raise money for kids with autism to participate in a fun run at no cost. Some kids with autism have a hard time feeling successful or special or even included in the community. This is a chance to show them what they can accomplish and cheer them on.

My name is Melanie and my son has autism. When he went to public school it was very clear that he was going to struggle a LOT! I was lucky enough that my family was able to find a way for me to quit my job and start homeschool. Money is tight but the progress he has shown in his education has been amazing. We have always told him that he can do anything, regardless of the obstacles.

 

As part of homeschooling, we discussed the possibility of doing a community service project. The idea he came up with was a kid's fun run for kids with autism. He said that he wanted to show other kids with autism that they could be strong like him. He said he wanted to give them a medal to make them feel special. This was a bit bigger of a project than I had expected to take on. However, his excitement for it has convinced me to do what I can.

 

We successfully ran a fun run in 2022 and were lucky enough to have a great turn out. Marcus and I have decided that we are going to make it an annual event and possibly have more events. We are working on raising funds for this year's "Active with Autism Fun Run".

The hope is to allow any kid with autism to participate for free and receive a shirt and a medal. the cost would be about $25/kid
