Kevin Kapeke Hume City Council - Aitken Ward

Hi I’m Kevin, I’m 23 years old and I’ll be running in the Hume City Council
elections representing Aitken Ward.

Why am I running?

Firstly, I am told people like me are apparently not supposed to run for positions
like these. I am too young. I do not have enough connections. I am a migrant. I am not like everyone else. I am inexperienced. Therefore, I do not deserve a seat at
this table. However, I know first-hand the hardships that 2020 has thrown at us. I
lost my fulltime job amidst this uncertainty and had to bounce back quite quickly
for my family’s sake whilst also maintaining my studies. I live in this area, send my sister to one of our local schools and I am employed in this area too.

Furthermore, as a migrant I believe I bring a different perspective to council, one
that has not been seen as Hume City Council is not the most diverse. Moreover, I will work diligently to represent everyone in Aitken Ward and holistically, in all of Hume. I will advocate to have the youth heard more on Council, so we feel like we have control of our own futures. I will stand-up for small businesses that are
doing it tough during Covid-19 and will be doing it even tougher as we enter a
post Covid-19 recover phase. As a son from a family that often times has to make ends meet, I will advocate for not only families in similar positions, but family’s
that need childcare, by working to strengthen our childcare services in Hume,
single parent households, families with small business and families that do not
have two or even one breadwinner. I will also advocate for the completion and
expansion of the roads that cause the most headaches in Aitken Ward:
Craigieburn Road, Mickleham Road and Somerton Road.

This year is unlike any other year. I am not able to hold a traditional fundraiser in
order to raise money to reach out to the thousands of people in this Ward. I need some help and support. No amount is too small as it will all add up to help me
reach as many people as possible.
