Kellys Island Trail

Donation protected

We’re seeking donations to help clear and maintain a nature trail around Kellys Island in Conception Bay, Newfoundland. (see photos below). You can do a self-guided hike of the trail now.

Kellys is an uninhabited Island in Conception Bay with a rich history of pirates, treasure, homesteads, farming, and beach boil-ups. It’s located 3 km off the shores of Long Harbor CBS, a 20 min drive from downtown St John’s. The island measures approx. 2.1 x 1.2 km with a mix of grasslands and trees, surrounded by spectacular cliffs. We’re clearing a trail that's 6 km around the circumference of the Island. There are two access points to the land; The Green on the SW side and Chimney Cove on the NE. There are no piers, so it’s a rocky beach landing. From the beach, you can access the island by hiking up a gradual slope assisted by ropes. The beach landing, climbing up on the island, and rough nature trail requires reasonable fitness and coordination. Once on top, you'll be treated to spectacular panoramic views of the bay from all sides as you trek in and out of pine and spruce forests, open fields, and nature trails. The trail is well marked. There are numerous areas to stop, rest, picnic, wilderness camp, and observe the views. The hike itself is undulating with moderate elevation changes, 500' ascending and 500' descending. The trail is cleared but not groomed, and a mix of dirt trail, grass, moss, fallen trees, stumps, and rocks, but it is all passable. There are some boggy areas, and measures are underway to keep boots dry. It's recommended to wear waterproof hiking boots, gloves to grip the rope access, and long pants or gators. Bring a backpack with lots of water and snacks. Trail clearing and maintenance are ongoing. There is no fresh water on the Island. It's not recommended to drink from bogs. People have been visiting, hiking, camping, and having boil-ups on the beach of Kellys Island for decades, and anyone can visit the Island anytime. The initial first pass of trail clearing is complete, but more work is ongoing. You can get there by boat, sail, or paddle and enjoy the trail. Be careful if you go there by boat, the sea state and weather can change quickly and dramatically in the bay. Treat the island and its nature with respect. No garbage zone. Pack it in and pack it out. Leave no trace, leave only footprints, and take only photos.

We’ve been personally funding this trail with no financial support. We'd appreciate your financial assistance and donations if you want to be part of this beautiful natural trail experience. Thank you.
