Keeping Hope Alive Resilient Transitional Housing

Tax deductible
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” ― Howard Thurman

What makes Pastor Maurice Lattimore come alive? His vision of (transitional housing) for men based on his own life experiences. For over 28 years, Pastor Lattimore lived in the streets in a life of that kept him returning to prison until one Sunday morning when he entered the North Avenue Presbyterian Church. Instantly, Pastor Lattimore was filled with extreme discomfort of just knowing he was in the wrong place. As he turned to leave, he heard a voice within say, “Sit down!”

And he did and soon learned it was exactly where he was supposed to be! Fourteen years later, Pastor Lattimore recounts how he knew he could always get a place to stay and a meal in downtown Atlanta but he longed for a shower and clean clothes. Fast forward to March 2024 where we find that Pastor Lattimore is the founder and executive director of Feet on the Street Ministries (www.fotsministries.org) with a vision for making a difference in one man’s life (four at a time) following his own journey where he learned:

· It is out of our comfort zone where we learn. Only in the discomfort in discomfort, do you find growth. We run from discomfort but we should run to face our discomfort.

· We all have what it takes to find healing and wholeness. “We don’t know what we don’t know.”

At the same time,

· Everyone is capable of investing in another human being

· Welcoming, nurturing people are willing to invest

· Relationship building makes a difference in a life.

A “Make a difference in a life” approach to transitioning to self-sustainability can be replicated with human, financial and spiritual resources. Men coming out of prison, life on the streets, and recovery, ready for transition housing will share life together being mentored and accompanied with:

o A safe place to live

o Life skills learned and reinforced

o Faith and Finance – course where financial skills learned, reinforced and encouraged through matching savings programs

o Practice of sharing life over meals in homes meeting as equals ready to learn for one another

o Community support for ongoing recovery

o On the job training for the Feet on the Street Ministries so that the FOTS Ministries will grow and serve the un-housed of Atlanta

“If I kept looking back on my days in prison, I would never look forward.” In order to give hope and offer sustainable resources to others we are trying to raise $100,000 over two years to help establish a sustainable transitional housing program for people who are coming from prison, recovery, and off the streets. With your support we can make this happen and thank you for taking the opportunity to read about our program.
