Keep YUCA Housed in East Palo Alto !!!

Youth United for Community Action (YUCA) has been rooted in East Palo Alto for 27 years. Over the course of that time, YUCA has trained over a thousand young people of color who, collectively, have been at the frontline of positive systemic change. YUCA has also seen many young leaders land on local boards, commissions, and other decision-making bodies in our community. In recent years, we have doubled-down on our anti-displacement campaign given the rising cost of housing, aggressive development pressures, and other factors that fuel the devastating process of gentrification. NOW DISPLACEMENT IS KNOCKING AT OUR FRONT DOOR, AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

In January, YUCA's property owner informed us he intends to remodel the house and put it on the market for sale. This legendary, yellow-brick house has been home to many successful campaigns created, led and run by East Palo Alto youth. Generations of dedicated, passionate, and successful leaders have evolved in their personal pursuits through this amazing organization. This office has served as an invaluable safe space to the youth as a learning and healing hub. It has also been an asset to the renter community who seeks help with activating their renter rights. Needless to say, the current YUCA site is a landmark of hope, opportunity, and relentless advocacy.

By purchasing the site and partnering with Pahali Community Land Trust to do so, YUCA would remain a permanent community asset, while providing affordable housing by leasing an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) and potentially building out an additional ADU. On behalf of YUCA’s youth organizers, staff, board members, alumni, and community members in East Palo Alto and beyond, we respectfully request your support to help us acquire this site, so we may continue developing East Palo Alto’s leadership pipeline, and transforming our community from our home base.

Pahali Community Land Trust and EPACANDO have formally approved working with YUCA to pursue this acquisition. To date, EPACANDO has pledged a $250,000 loan toward the purchase of the site, and another private funder has also pledged $250,000! The goal here accounts for the percentage GoFundMe will take and anything over our fundraising goal will be used for badly needed repairs to our central heating and roof.

The landlord would like us to submit an offer by the end of March and if we do not have this money, we would have to relocate this summer.
