Keep the Southwest Corridor Community Farm Thriving

Donation protected
The Southwest Corridor Community Farm (SWCCF) is raising funds to support our operations and ensure this community treasure can continue to thrive for years to come!

SWCCF is a not-for-profit, volunteer led urban community garden of 100+ members located at Hoffman and Lamartine Streets in Jamaica Plain, MA. We are one of 56 community gardens in Boston that are managed by the Trustees of Reservations. Each community garden is responsible for its own operating budget, and SWCCF is now facing several thousands of dollars of new expenses for private yard waste collection in addition to our regular operating costs. (It is not the policy of the City of Boston or the Trustees to collect yard waste from community gardens and we had stopped composting in the garden several years ago to combat a neighborhood-wide rodent issue.)

Without these critical funds, our garden is faced with a deficit and must make difficult cuts to balance our budget. Bulk orders for straw mulch and hand tools are on hold, funds for lawn and leaf bags are dwindling. Please consider donating to keep the garden growing and affordable for all!

About Us:

The SWCCF is deeply rooted in the community activism of Jamaica Plain in the late 1960's -70's. As the bulldozers were closing in and time was running out, residents of Jamaica Plain and Roxbury formed a grassroots coalition and fought tirelessly to prevent a major highway (I-95) from cutting their neighborhood in half. In 1977, as part of this protest, a large group reclaimed the razed land, clearing debris and trucking in soil. Federal funding (CETA) turned the grounds into a community garden and greenhouse called 'The Farm.' The following year, the original “Wake Up the Earth Festival” was born out of these efforts to celebrate the defeat of the highway and the rebirth of spring.

To ensure that the SWCCF would be protected for generations to come, the gardeners organized again in 2007 to become part of the Boston Natural Areas Network (BNAN), now part of The Trustees of Reservations www.thetrustees.org .

At SWCCF it is our mission to be good stewards of the land by building community, implementing organic practices, and fighting food insecurity by donating fresh produce grown at SWCCF to neighbors in need through the Produce to Pantries program.
