For over 143 years, The Groton Independent has been telling the story of our community — one week at a time.
We’ve covered your kids’ games, your school events, your city meetings, your businesses, your milestones, and the everyday moments that make Groton what it is. We’ve worked to document history as it happens — preserving it for the next generation.
But today, running a weekly newspaper is harder than ever.
Printing costs continue to rise. Postage increases. Supplies cost more. Advertising revenue — once the backbone of community newspapers — continues to decline. Like many small-town papers across the country, we’re feeling the pressure.
We want to be clear:
We are not asking for help to pay ourselves.
We both work full-time jobs outside the newspaper.
We are asking for help with the basic operating costs required to publish each week — printing, postage, insurance, equipment, website hosting, and other essential expenses.
Community newspapers often aren’t fully appreciated until they’re gone. And once they disappear, they rarely come back. When a local paper closes, a town loses more than news — it loses accountability, history, connection, and a trusted local voice.
We don’t want that to happen in Groton.
