Tasmanias expect to feel safe in our streets, schools and public places. Increasingly, general public and frontline officers face the very real danger posed by concealed blades. With thanks to Reid's Law, introduced in May 2025, police officers are now able to stop and search a person for dangerous articles in a public place. Since the passing of Reid's Law, there has been no funding allocated to knife-detecting wands for Tasmania Police to utilise. We want to help by raising funds to supply them with 200 wands.
These handheld wands are an affordable, non-invasive tool that can help officers screen for concealed metal quickly and safely in the hope to prevent violent incidents before they happen. By funding 200 wands, we can equip officers across the state.
It is estimated each wand is around $400 so we are looking to raise $80,000.00. Funds will be used for purchase, shipping and any vendor required set up.
Why are we doing this?
In light of the devastating news that a 20 year old man was killed as a result of a knife wound in the early hours of Saturday morning and the death of Reid Ludwig in 2019 due to the same circumstances, we want to turn grief into action and are determined to make a difference. Two lives have been lost and countless other impacted. This is not an official Tasmania Police campaign and I will work with the appropriate police contacts to ensure donated funds are accepted and used in accordance with their procurement procedures.
