Friends and supporters of Henry Estate Winery,
We come to you today with a heavy heart, burdened by the challenges that have befallen our beloved winery and the legacy of Scott Henry. Many of you have seen the "No Trespassing" signs marring the beautiful Umpqua landscape – a stark departure from the warm and welcoming spirit that has defined the winery for the past forty years.
The story behind those signs is equal parts David and Goliath and The Little Red Hen. It involves a decade-long battle waged by bitter family members. Since Scott passed away just more than two months ago, we find ourselves mourning not only his loss, but also grappling with relentless attacks from those family members, including his own son. We've exhausted our resources in this struggle against greed, battling against timber money ironically derived from trees our father planted with care.
Our parents instilled in us the virtue of giving back and we have taken great pride in supporting the community. But we now find ourselves in a humbling and precarious position. Despite the belief that an appeal could be successful, we have run out of the financial means to pursue it. Moreover, an impending eviction looms over us, compelling urgent actions to relocate assets before being locked out. It is heartbreaking to witness a legacy crumble due to a lack of financial resources to defend it.
If you or someone you know can offer aid, we would be eternally grateful. We extend heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your unwavering support of the man who you knew as Scott, but was always Dad to us, and the wines he held dear. Thank you for being a part of our extended family and for standing with us during these challenging times.
It is our hope that, if we overcome this battle, we will be able to open a tasting room in a new location. Though it won’t be in our familiar setting, the spot next to the vines Dad planted, we will still be able to offer tastings and the opportunity to purchase our wines. And in that way, we’ll be able to keep Scott Henry’s legacy alive.
Much love,
Syndi & Shari (Scott's daughters)
