In response to the current crisis, we are raising funds to distribute to the refugees being held at the border between Mexico and the United States. Dr. Daniela Dominguez (“Danny”) will be traveling to the border to provide money and assistance to individuals in need. Even though President Trump has signed an executive order on family separation, it is not immediately clear whether, or when, detained children will be reunited with their parents. The current immigration policy in the United States has resulted in the separation of thousands of families at the border between Mexico and the United States. Families attempting to enter the U.S. from Mexico are seeking asylum from unsafe living conditions in their home country. Many individuals are living in areas where crime and violence run rampant, with little protection from the local government.
Within the past two months, over 2,000 children have been separated from their parents and placed in unfamiliar detention facilities where they will wait to be placed in foster care or reunited with their caregivers. Some children are left waiting for months. This separation is traumatizing for the entire family, but for the children who are in critical stages of development, this experience can be particularly damaging and impactful. All of us have a basic human need to feel loved and safe, and children deserve to remain with the familiarity of their caregivers as they go through this difficult time.
