Hi friends,
I’m reaching out because AHP’s mission is personal to me. After 20+ years as a volunteer, and another 7½ years on the clinical staff, I have now joined the Community Advisory Board to help AHP continue to provide the life-saving services it has been providing since 1984.
Founded at the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1984, AHP pioneered the world’s first high‑volume HIV counseling and testing program. Four decades later, its staff of dedicated mental‑health professionals and peer counselors serve more than 6,500 clients every year—from LGBTQ+ youth seeking their first safe therapist to long‑term survivors managing trauma and isolation.
Today, public funding for community mental‑health services keeps shrinking. Insurance rarely covers the true cost of culturally competent care (if you can even find someone who takes your insurance), city budgets are tight, and state grants fluctuate year‑to‑year. Right now, AHP must raise unrestricted dollars simply to:
- Keep the sliding‑scale/no‑cost therapy clinic staffed five days a week
- Stock HIV/STI rapid‑testing supplies and mobile‑testing vans
- Run a 24/7 crisis triage team for walk‑ins and phone support
- Train emerging LGBTQ+ clinicians so our community always has therapists who get it
