Empowering the 3rd World: Help Us Digitize & Share Vital Knowledge

Help us continue the mission of "Helping the 3rd World to help itself."

The Mission Imagine living in a remote village where access to the internet is unreliable or non-existent, yet you need to build a water pump, treat a local disease, or improve your crop yield. For over two decades, the CD3WD Project has been the bridge across that digital divide.

We are a non-profit initiative dedicated to providing free, offline-accessible technical information to the developing world. Our library contains thousands of documents on agriculture, health, engineering, construction, and appropriate technology—practical knowledge that saves lives and builds communities.

Our History & Legacy The project was founded in 2003 by Alex Weir, a visionary software developer who believed that knowledge should be free and accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or economic status. Alex tirelessly curated a massive library of "how-to" technical documents, distributing them originally on CDs (hence "CD3WD"—CDs for 3rd World Development) and later DVDs to aid workers, NGOs, and remote communities.

Sadly, Alex passed away in 2014, and for a time, the project went offline. However, the need for this information never disappeared.

The Reboot: CD3WD 3.0 In late 2021, friends and former colleagues of Alex, led by Oliver Walker, came together to resurrect the project. We have successfully recovered approximately 250GB of Alex’s original data and documents and launched a new hub at www.cd3wdproject.org.

Now, we need your help to secure the future of this archive and expand its reach.

Why We Need Funding We are operating entirely on volunteer efforts, but hosting, maintaining, and expanding a digital library of this magnitude incurs real costs. Your donations will directly support our 4 Key Priorities for 2024/2025:

Infrastructure & Dissemination: Keeping the servers running and optimizing the website so that this massive database remains free and fast for users worldwide. We want to ensure the "snowball effect"—where this data spreads organically from user to user.

Digitization: We have a backlog of valuable physical paper resources that need to be scanned, digitized, and added to the archive.

Gathering New Material: Identifying and legally acquiring existing technical documents that are currently unpublished or hard to find, ensuring our library stays relevant.

Commissioning Content: Creating new, simplified guides and engineering drawings where gaps exist, making complex topics easier to understand for non-experts.

Who You Are Helping By supporting CD3WD, you aren't just keeping a website online. You are supporting:

Communities in developing nations who use these guides for sanitation, farming, and building.

Aid workers and NGOs who rely on this offline library in disaster zones.

Educators looking for free curriculum materials in STEM and vocational trades.

Self-reliance enthusiasts worldwide who understand the value of preserving practical human knowledge.

Please Donate Today Alex Weir’s dream was simple: share useful information for free to help people help themselves. With your support, we can ensure this digital library of humanity's practical knowledge survives and thrives for the next generation.

Every dollar helps us keep the lights on and the data flowing. Thank you for being a part of this journey.
