Keep Akente Express Serving Denver's Community

Donation protected
Akente Express has served Denver as the premiere source of afrocentric merchandise since 1991. The retail store is part of the city’s history and ongoing cultural story, offering authentic African goods and high-quality personal care products that cater to the unique needs of the community. However, like many small businesses, the challenges of post-Covid era inflation and decreased sales are threatening to shutter the beloved store.

Located on Park Avenue West, between Champa Street and Curtis Street on the southern border of the historic Five Points district, Akente Express has stood the test of time. Despite nearby gentrification, population increases and economic fluctuations, the store has been a staple for the Black community and a source of specialty goods. Along with imported African artifacts, jewelry, homegoods and accessories, the business offers signature hair and skin care products, beautiful artwork created by Black artists, incense oils, holistic herbs, and Ghanaian apparel imported directly from the Motherland.

In 2020, when businesses around the world were faced with sudden closures due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Akente Express was heavily impacted. For over 30 years, the store’s business traffic has relied on personal, face-to-face transactions; the inability to serve regular customers for several months was a devastating blow. In an attempt to navigate the changed economic landscape, the business’ website was updated to offer online ordering and allow loyal customers to purchase their favorite products.

Now, four years after the start of the pandemic, business still hasn’t returned to normal.

Despite supply chains finally being restored to pre-Covid era functionality, inflation has affected everyone. For small businesses hit hardest by the pandemic, the effects are detrimental. Many people are opting to purchase products from companies like Amazon and big-box stores due to convenience, and smaller retailers are struggling to compete. For Akente Express, the strongest edge over competitors is its ability to provide hard-to-find products that meet the needs of Black and African Americans in the Mile High City. Yet, without the support of the community, the treasured retail space may not survive much longer.

As sales dwindle, tax debts are piling up and inventory is low. Akente Express needs your help to overcome the damaging effects of Covid and inflation. In addition to returning to the store and shopping for your home, personal and apparel needs, please consider a donation to ensure that this special cultural space continues to thrive well into the future.
