Hey everyone!

My name is Alberto Chávez and I’m an international student from Ecuador pursuing my Bachelor of Arts at St. Thomas University.

Like many of my international peers, I have struggled to pay my tuition, but with a lot of sacrifice and hard work, I have been able to pay off my first two years of university.

My situation, however, has taken a drastic turn. Since the pandemic, my parents have been carrying over a moderate amount of debt, and with the current economic state of my home country (which has worsened with recent attacks of domestic terrorism at the start of the year), my parents haven’t had any source of income for over three months, while being more than $60,000 CAD in debt themselves.

This has made it almost impossible to continue paying for my studies, even with the huge help I have received from my sister and the income I earn from the four jobs I have. Because I am not a permanent resident or Canadian citizen, I am not eligible for Canadian student loans. I am also not eligible for student loans in my home country because of my parents’ debt, as they would have to be my cosigners.

It’s gotten to the point where I have looked into the possibility of dropping out of school to work for at least a year and then come back, but unfortunately it would impact my immigration status.

I am currently working four jobs on and off-campus, amounting to 40 hours per week. Although I feel completely blessed and grateful to have the chance to work in different places, I am still short of money to be able to fully pay my third year of university, with my tuition debt amounting to $17,000. If I can’t pay off my third year of university, I won’t be able to enroll in my fourth year nor graduate in 2025.

Above all, I want to stay at school. I want to graduate and receive the degree I have worked so hard for. STU has transformed me and taught me the meaning of hard work. I love studying psychology and having a positive impact in my community and the people surrounding me through my role as President of the International Students’ Association.

I believe there is more of my story to be told, and I want to keep telling it. Today, I ask you to give me a chance to follow my dreams and accomplish my goals, whether it is by donating in any way you can, or simply sharing this with your network; I would immensely appreciate it.

Mi nombre es Alberto Chávez y soy un estudiante internacional de Ecuador que cursa su Licenciatura en Artes en la Universidad Santo Tomás.

Al igual que muchos de mis compañeros internacionales, he luchado para pagar mi matrícula, pero con mucho sacrificio y trabajo duro, he sido capaz de pagar mis dos primeros años de universidad.

Mi situación, sin embargo, ha dado un giro drástico. Desde la pandemia, mis padres arrastran una deuda moderada, y con el actual estado económico de mi país de origen (que ha empeorado con los recientes atentados de terrorismo interno a principios de año), mis padres llevan más de tres meses sin tener ninguna fuente de ingresos, mientras que ellos mismos están endeudados en más de 60.000 dólares canadienses.

Esto ha hecho casi imposible seguir pagando mis estudios, incluso con la enorme ayuda que he recibido de mi hermana y los ingresos que obtengo de los cuatro trabajos que tengo. Como no soy residente permanente ni ciudadano canadiense, no puedo optar a los préstamos estudiantiles canadienses. Tampoco puedo optar a préstamos estudiantiles en mi país de origen debido a la deuda de mis padres, ya que ellos tendrían que ser mis cosignatarios.

He llegado al punto de plantearme la posibilidad de dejar los estudios para trabajar al menos un año y luego volver, pero desgraciadamente eso afectaría a mi estatus migratorio.

Actualmente tengo cuatro trabajos dentro y fuera del campus, que suman 40 horas semanales. Aunque me siento completamente bendecida y agradecida por tener la oportunidad de trabajar en diferentes lugares, todavía me falta dinero para poder pagar completamente mi tercer año de universidad, ya que mi deuda de matrícula asciende a 17.000 dólares. Si no puedo pagar mi tercer año de universidad, no podré matricularme en el cuarto ni graduarme en 2025.

Por encima de todo, quiero seguir estudiando. Quiero graduarme y recibir el título por el que tanto he trabajado. STU me ha transformado y me ha enseñado el significado del trabajo duro. Me encanta estudiar psicología y tener un impacto positivo en mi comunidad y en la gente que me rodea a través de mi papel como Presidenta de la Asociación Internacional de Estudiantes.

Creo que hay más de mi historia que contar, y quiero seguir contándola. Hoy, les pido que me den la oportunidad de seguir mis sueños y alcanzar mis metas, ya sea donando de cualquier manera que puedan, o simplemente compartiendo esto con su red; se lo agradecería inmensamente.
