Hi, my name is Dawn Laws and I’m fundraising for my daughter Kaylee who is 24 weeks pregnant with her third child. Kaylee & Brandon received devastating news at her routine 20 week anatomy scan. Kaylee was referred to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital immediately where after two days of testing (MRI, Ultrasounds, and Echocardiogram) baby Layla was diagnosed with CDH. CDH stands for Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. Layla’s diaphragm did not completely develop and this allowed her Bowels, Liver and Stomach to herniate from her abdomen into her chest cavity. This affects normal lung growth for Layla. Her lungs are cramped for space so they are much smaller than they should be. Her heart is also pushed into the right side of her chest. Layla will be placed on a ventilator as soon as she is born and will undergo surgery to repair the CDH once she is stable. Kaylee has to relocate to Cincinnati between 34-36 weeks so her and the baby can be monitored by her care team more closely. Layla will be in the NICU for an undetermined amount of time after her surgery while her lungs continue to grow. Thankfully Kaylee & Brandon will be able to apply to stay at the Ronald McDonald house while Layla is in the NICU. Over the next several months they have to make regular trips for appointments to Cincinnati and I am hoping this fundraiser will help take some of the burden and worry off of them and help them with the cost of travel expenses (hotel, gas, food) so they can focus solely on Kaylee and Laylas health.
