Little Robbie was born on July 19th, 2015 to newlyweds Robert and Melissa Kavanaugh of Tacoma, WA. At 1 month old Robbie was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis (NF1), which causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. At 6 months old, Robbie was diagnosed with Horner syndrome, because one of his eyes has a drooping eyelid and one of his pupils is always dilated. Horner syndrome is caused by the disruption of the nerve pathway from the brain to the face and eye on one side.
Tests have revealed that he has a tumor above his lung. Often times the tumors resulting from NF1 are benign and can be successfully removed through surgery. However, Robbie’s doctor suspects that this tumor is likely to be malignant. More tests are being performed to determine if the tumor is truly malignant or not, but either way, the tumor will probably need to come out to prevent further disruption of his development.
While Robbie does have medical insurance through the State of Washington, there are many expenses that are not covered by insurance. Melissa has had to quit her job in order to care for Robbie full-time and take him to his numerous doctor appointments in Seattle. The expense of driving back and forth from Tacoma to Seattle so often is already straining their tight budget. Robert is working full-time, but providing for a family of three on one income is a struggle even in the best of conditions these days.
Fortunately, with the generosity of friends and family, Robert was able to make it through his own battle with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma in 2013. It is a rare cancer with a high risk of reoccurrence, so Robert still has to go to the doctor regularly himself to make sure his cancer has not returned. Robert and Melissa are doing everything they can to cut back expenses and are seeking assistance from government services that they qualify for. Unfortunately, even with budgeting, it is not enough to make ends meet right now. That is why they have resorted to asking for your generosity once more. Any amount will help ease the financial burden of getting Robbie through treatment so their family can be cancer-free again!
