On Friday, April 7, 2018 my best friend Erika Hawkins and her husband, Zane received news that no parent should ever have to hear. Her sweet baby, Kai, has been diagnosed with  Leukemia. For several days prior, Kai had a high fever and would not eat or drink anything at all. He hadn’t been able to urinate for an entire day when Erika decided to call his Doctor. The Doctor was concerned about his fluid intake and asked them to take Kai to the emergency room to have him checked out. Shortly after running some diagnostic tests the ER staff had them transported to the Children’s Hospital where Erika and Zane were told the awful news. 

At this point we don’t know very much, but what we do know is that the burden that is about to be set on this sweet boy is going to be a heavy one. He is scheduled to start chemotherapy on Tuesday and hopefully by that time we will have a few more answers. 

We know that the road ahead is going to be long and exhausting. Worrying about finances should be the last thing on their mind. With Erika needing to halt her endevour in her Nursing Program and leaving her job immediately to care for Kai, the family’s income has been abruptly cut in half. Between medical bills and everyday living expenses, difficult financial times are ahead for Erika and her family. I’m asking for your help to ease the financial burden that Kai’s diagnosis has and will continue to have on their family, so they may solely focus on loving their brave little boy through his treatment.
