In 2013, I walked through the doors of Captain Shreve High School as a relatively fresh and young English teacher...ready to take on the world and instill in students a love of reading and writing. I was encouraged to meet with another teacher, one Heather Hooper, to discuss strategies and texts and collaborate. I could have never guessed one quick meeting with a beautifully quirky woman in a navy and white polka dot dress was going to change the course of my life.
Heather Hooper is an educator, friend, thespian, artist, and most recently, a mother. She has undertaken the immense responsibility of raising her niece as her own. Not only has she undertaken this...but she has fought tooth and nail for the privilege of providing her niece with the love and laughter every child deserves.
This undertaking has not been without sacrifice, especially monetarily. In the fight to secure a happy and healthy home for her niece, Heather has incurred a large debt between legal fees and travel.
For her entire life, Heather has taken care of other people. She has given her entire being to her students and friends. She has positively impacted every person she has ever met.
And it is our turn to return the favor.
