Losing someone close to us is a stark reminder of life’s fragility, and it’s especially heart-wrenching when it affects an entire family.

Our dear friend and colleague, Mariota, recently endured an unimaginable loss. Her sister and brother-in-law, Olivia and Gareth Finnemore, and their 14 year old son Garth, tragically lost their lives in a car accident in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Olivia and Gareth’s 12-year-old son Harry was the sole survivor.

As a community, our hearts are filled with deep sorrow and compassion for this young boy, who remains in the hospital after the accident that took his family.

In the midst of this heartbreaking tragedy, we’d like to remember the love and joy that Gareth and Olivia brought into the world, and to celebrate their remarkable journey.

Gareth and Olivia’s love story began at Maritzburg varsity, and they built a beautiful life with their two boys. Olivia was known for her grace and poise, while Gareth was the life of every gathering, always bringing energy and fun. They complemented each other perfectly, a bond that radiated to everyone they knew.

As we mourn the loss of these extraordinary individuals, our focus turns to Harry, who faces an unimaginable journey after the loss of his parents and brother. Though no offering can heal the enormity of this loss, the outpouring of support for Harry and his extended family has been immense — friends and family have rallied around him, with many traveling from far and wide to support.

It's no surprise that Olivia and Gareth’s legacy of kindness and warmth shines through in how their community has come together. In moments like these, we're reminded of the profound impact we have on each other — life is fleeting, but the connections we make and the kindness we offer creates a lasting legacy.

To support Harry’s recovery and ease the burden on his family, we’ve set up a fundraiser. Any contribution, big or small, will go directly toward aiding Harry's healing process and supporting any immediate needs of his extended family.
