Volunteering in Zanzibar
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Primrose. I am currently studying in Year 9 at Livingstone Academy Bournemouth. I have been given the opportunity to volunteer in Zanzibar in July 2025. The trip is being organised by the African Adventures charity. As the trip is unfunded, I need to raise £2060.
African Adventures organise volunteering programmes in several African countries. Zanzibar has historically been a destination for spice traders, it is also known as ‘Spice Island’. More recently it has become a popular tourist destination. Whilst this has brought economic growth, a large percentage of Zanzibarians still live in poverty, 37% live on less than a pound a day. The government schools are very overcrowded and underfunded. It is common for classes to contain over one hundred students with just two teachers. In some cases, they are forced to split the day into two sittings. I will be helping to improve the children’s education by working as classroom support and assisting with construction projects, building much needed new facilities such as classrooms and toilet blocks.
In addition to running the volunteer programs African Adventures uses their funding to make other positive changes in the lives of the children of Zanzibar. Examples of this are ensuring the kids have school uniforms and are provided with school meals. Another example is the WASH Programme, with the final construction work finished at Kinuni School. The project has delivered 37 new gendered latrine toilets, 12 handwashing stations, and a transformational menstrual health management programme for over 15,000 students.
I am really excited to have the chance to contribute to helping improve the lives of the Zanzibarian children who have so much less than we do.
I would massively appreciate any donation you are able to make to help me reach my goal.
Thanks for your time, Primrose
