Most of you will be aware of our journey but for those that are not, Alex was diagnosed with Cancer at the base of his tongue in October 2023. He received 35 sessions of Radiotherapy and 2 sessions of Chemotherapy ending in January 24.
In May 24 he received the all clear. Within a few weeks, Alex was in a lot of pain and after a lot of crying out for help, finally got seen by his consultant who confirmed that he still has Cancer and that it was never gone. As you can imagine, this crushed our world.
He has now been faced with an impossible decision of either having a Glosso-Laryngectomy meaning he will never speak or eat again and also comes with only a 25% success rate or palliative care which would give him on average 12-18 months to live.
Alex has bravely made the decision to have surgery as it is the only option that could give him a potential future.
Now that we have met with the Surgeons we have learnt that the surgery is very complicated and will take many hours to complete. The best case scenario is that Alex will be in hospital for a minimum of 15 days but could be as many as 30/40 days in a hospital that is an hour and a half away from home each way (on a good day).
With this in mind, I have decided to swallow my pride and ask for some help and those that know me will know that this doesn’t come easily for me.
To make the 15 days post surgery or potentially more a little easier and to make sure that Alex will have a visitor every day, I would like to be able to book a hotel room for any of his visitors to stay the night and also to have somewhere to go for a rest if needed.
If there is any money left over, we will put it towards an iPad that Alex is going to desperately need to be able to communicate with people.
Thank you in advance for any support you can give in this extremely difficult time in our lives.
