Imagine your 10-year-old child was horrifically killed by a 14-year-old known to them.
Then, imagine that the killer is given access to more mental health support, government payments and assistance than the victims’ family have access to, to the extent that she is allowed to go on escorted community day release to enjoy activities, such as going to the beach.
This is the killer whose actions were so horrific that the details have been suppressed from the community for 20 years. Yet she, the killer, is allowed out into the community?
This is our nightmare reality. It is one we live every day and night.
My beautiful 10-year-old daughter, Biddy, was the victim of such a killing. Until recently, we were made to believe that we were unable to speak her, or show images of her for anyone to see. She became a nameless statistic, all because we as Biddy the victims’ family were not able to access minimum advice regarding the matter.
We have an opportunity to bring about legislative change to support families if they ever have to face the worst imaginable days of their life, after the death of a child. We live in hope that no other family has endure what we have.
Nothing can give us back the thing we want most, our precious daughter, but we are doing this to protect other families from the experiences we have had to endure and to keep the community protected from brutal killers such as the then teenager who killed Biddy.
We do not feel that the way the legal system has handled Biddy’s case was appropriate and we are horrified that the killer has already been given privileges that Biddy will ever be able to experience. We have been searching for a way to put the question to as large a population as possible to assess whether these decisions pass the "Pub Test" (quote, Dom Porter grieving father). Would most people think it is OK that such a brutal killer is already allowed to access the community and has been given better access to mental health and financial support than any of Biddy’s family members.
It is not OK for the legal system to say that killers, such as Biddy’s, are too horrific to contemplate and try to “hide” them away, or to rush them through the court system without consideration of the killed victims’ families concerns or wishes.
Any funding will allow us to pay for advertising to increase awareness across different media avenues, including social, press and traditional methods to ensure that the deadline of 24/09/2024 for the parliamentary petition is met, in terms of getting 20,000 plus votes. We currently still require just over 10,000 votes in the next 68 days. This equates to over 1700 per week and while responses after the latest media releases where high, current voting have slowed considerably.
We are wanting to raise funds to promote the cause in any form we see fit. All funds raised will be used for promoting the cause, i.e. Facebook advertising, letterbox drops, car stickers, etc. Any surplus funds raised will be donated to various charities that advocates for victims’ rights.
Unfortunately, only people who reside in NSW can sign the petition, but please, if you are outside NSW send the link on to anyone you know who lives in NSW. We would also appreciate you passing the link to all your contacts and if you have any social groups that you could share it with.
NSW Members of Parliament, your constituents have tagged you and are requesting your support in promoting and supporting this legislative change.
