My name is Mekia Walker, and I am a mother who has spent the last six years living a nightmare that no parent should ever face. My son is being wrongfully accused of a crime he did not commit, and his name has been dragged through the mud by people who don’t know him, don’t know the truth, and don’t know the pain this has put our family through.
People in the community have pointed fingers at him. His name has been exploited in the newspapers and on TV. We have watched strangers speak on him as if they know his heart, when they do not.
Before his arrest, a sheriff picked him up for questioning and later released him because there was nothing connecting him to this tragedy. That same sheriff has since been arrested for his own crimes. Months later, my son was picked up again by the Indianola Police Department. He told them repeatedly that he had absolutely nothing to do with the crime that took place. But instead of listening, they arrested him anyway. To make matters worse, that officer has since been relieved of her badge for criminal activity as well.
Yet my son, who has no criminal record, no history of violence, and no reason to be involved, is still the one sitting in the middle of this storm.
We have been praying every day. I remind myself constantly, “If you’re worrying, you’re not praying.” But some days the fear, the stress, and the hurt feel unbearable. My son is discouraged. I am discouraged. But we are holding onto God with everything in us because we know the truth, and we know God sees the truth.
Right now, he has a public defender who is overwhelmed and cannot give his case the time and attention it desperately deserves. My son needs a strong, experienced attorney who will fight for him, dig into the evidence, and stand firmly for his innocence, someone who will not be intimidated or distracted by the noise, the rumors, or the damage already done to his name.
I cannot afford that kind of attorney on my own. So I am humbly, prayerfully asking for help.
Every donation, no matter the amount, will go directly toward hiring a private defense lawyer who can fight for my son’s future and help clear his name once and for all. If you cannot give, please share this page. Please pray for us. Please help us bring light into a situation full of darkness and confusion.
I believe in justice. I believe in truth. And I believe that God will not let my son’s life be destroyed by lies.
Thank you, from the deepest place in my heart, for standing with us.
