Background

Luis fled El Salvador in 2019, only days after witnessing the murder of his fourteen-year-old stepson at the hands of a prominent gang. He first stayed in Mexico for a year and half with his partner, Renata, and his then-five-year-old daughter, Saira, who were all at risk in El Salvador as witnesses to the murder and for having reported the murder to the police. They entered the United States in June 2021, and moved in with Luis’s mother, Maria, in New York.

Still reeling from the loss of a close family member, the family then had to cope with a second loss: Renata passed away from COVID-19 in August 2021 after contracting it weeks after their arrival into the United States. Luis and his family were devastated emotionally, and financially from the cost of funeral and her hospital bills with no health insurance. Only one month later, Luis, Maria, and Saira went to an ICE check-in, and Luis was arrested and detained in Orange County Jail.

Luis was able to receive legal representation through the NYIFUP program at The Bronx Defenders. Despite expressing fear of returning to El Salvador, and the hard work of him and his legal team, he was ordered removed on February 9, 2021. He is currently appealing his case before the Board of Immigration Appeals. Luis has now been detained for ten long months. Maria is struggling with being the unexpected sole caretaker of Saira and meeting the financial and emotional needs of a young child who has been a witness to, and endured, so much trauma in such a short period of time. Maria is currently two months behind on her $1,000 monthly rent and owes $14,000 in funeral bills and $1,176 in monthly hospital bills for Renata. She currently gets food by going to free food pantries and is on the verge of losing her housecleaning job from frequently having to bring Saira because she can’t afford childcare.

Right now, we are asking for financial support for #JusticeforLuis to help bring some sense of stability to his family. Our goal is to reach $20,000.

Luis escapo de El Salvador en 2019, solo unos días después de presenciar el asesinato de su hijastro de catorce años a manos de una pandilla prominente. Primero se quedó en México durante un año y medio con su pareja, Renata, y su hija Saira, que entonces tenía cinco años, quienes corrían peligro en El Salvador por ser testigos del asesinato y por haber denunciado el asesinato ante la justicia.
