Justice for Eric Omeasoo
Hello,
My name is Chasity Phillips. I am the maternal aunt of Eric Omeasoo, 13, who was killed at the MacEwan LRT Station in Edmonton, Alberta, on February 5, 2025. I am also the acting family representative and an advocate for Eric and our family.
Eric was a child. He had just turned 13. He was a son, brother, uncle, grandson, great-grandson, nephew, cousin, friend, Grade 8 student, and basketball teammate. He should still be here with us today.
Since Eric was killed, our family has been actively seeking answers, truth, and transparency to understand how and why our boy was killed, and why the adult responsible was not criminally charged.
Throughout this process, our family has faced limited and inconsistent information, various barriers and multiple 25-year bans to access information about his death. Our family has also faced the denial of supports commonly available to families of homicide victims. As a result, we were left to navigate this devastating process largely on our own.
Eric’s grandmother and I spent months walking the streets searching for witnesses. We built awareness through community outreach and social media. I began teaching myself law, process, and procedure so we could understand Eric’s rights and our family’s rights.
No grieving family should ever have to become investigators or legal advocates simply to understand how their child died.
Legal Proceedings
Our family has filed an Application for Judicial Review in the Alberta Court of King’s Bench.
The respondents to this application are:
• Edmonton Police Service
• Alberta Crown Prosecution Service
• The Attorney General of Alberta; Minister of Justice
The application seeks judicial review of decisions and actions related to the investigation and prosecutorial response to Eric Omeasoo’s death.
Procedural Timeline
• August 6, 2025
As self-represented applicants, Chasity Phillips and Rhonda Spence, Eric’s grandmother and legal guardian, filed an Application for Judicial Review in the Alberta Court of King’s Bench.
• August 20, 2025
The Court granted the application to proceed to a threshold hearing and expedited the matter for a one-day hearing. The presiding Justice raised the issue of appointing an amicus curiae to assist the Court, given that the family was self-represented.
• October 9, 2025
An afternoon hearing was held on the proposal of amicus.
Legal counsel for the Minister of Justice appeared in opposition of the family being granted an amicus.
The appointment of amicus for the family was declined...
• Late October 2025
With approximately two weeks remaining before the evidence submission deadline of October 28, our family retained legal counsel with Sharon Roberts Law Group.
• November 18, 2025
Our facts and findings were presented to the Justice in Court of King’s Bench by legal counsel Sharon Roberts and Bo Kruk.
• Current Status
We are awaiting the Justice's decision. Once a decision is issued, our legal team will advise on next procedural steps.
Why $13?
Eric had just turned 13 when his life was taken.
In his memory, we are asking supporters to consider donating $13. A small but powerful act that, together, creates meaningful impact.
Any amount is deeply appreciated.
