My name is Emily and I am a secondary survivor of domestic violence. My mother, Carol Baur, was a victim of a domestic homicide and on July 4th, 2019 our lives would change forever.
In memory of my mother, Carol Baur, I am raising funds to honor her heroic efforts to stop a crazed man from attacking neighbors. I am donating the proceeds to Turning Point Services to End Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault and Lakeshore Legal Aid.
On July 4th, 2019, my mother’s abuser had taken his abuse to another level. He was harassing and threatening harm on the neighbors. My mother chose to stand up to prevent the neighbors from being attacked. The man then turned on my mother for speaking against him and took her life. He barricaded himself in her house for 30 hours. The police attempted forced entry numerous ways, while avoiding cross fire. They had to damage the front of her home, the windows and flood the home to attempt to get the man out. Due to the damage of her home, very little personal items or memories were able to be retrieved from her house. The home needed to be demolished.
In recent events, Turning Point, Lakeshore Legal Aid and I, joined forces to educate the city of St. Clair Shores on domestic violence. The city has made the decision to charge my mother’s estate for the demolition of her home. The home was left in despair and a public safety issue due to the abusers actions.
I am raising the funds to help these amazing organizations provide and assist other women in need. I have not only received an immense amount of support from these amazing organizations, but I have learned a tremendous amount about domestic violence.
Domestic abuse is not cut and dry. Victims of domestic abuse typically assess whether it is safer to leave or to stay. My mother had made the choice, it was safer to stay. When she finally had enough of the abuse and stood up for what was right, the abuse ended. Just as she imagined it would.
Please consider donating in honor of Carol Baur and the 2 year anniversary of her tragedy.
