On July 4, 2025 after facing a year of severe and sadistic intimate partner violence, our friend and community member, Aziza shot her abusive boyfriend in order to save her own life. After shooting her abuser, she called 911 to save his life. She then left in their shared vehicle to get her affairs in order before calling her lawyer to turn herself in. Instead of being recognized as a victim in fear for her life, the Jackson Police Department has charged her with Murder. And despite the clear and documented evidence of abuse as well as Aziza's absence of a violent criminal record, bail was set at $1,00,000, making it impossible to post bond or fight for freedom without community support.
