Help Just Food feed hungry students!

Just Food Collective is a food justice not-for-profit situated in Victoria. Founded in 2021 by Bachelor of Food Studies students, they hope to empower young people to create a better food system for everyone.

We have just released a report on student food insecurity at William Angliss Institute revealing that 44% of students are food insecure. This is similar to other institutes and universities across Australia. We conducted the Fed Up! campaign from June to November 2022 and have just finalised the findings and recommendations.

We did this research with no funding! We did it because don't want to see our fellow peers go hungry!

As we are a small not-for-profit, with volunteers who are mostly students and working full-time, we don't get a lot of time to look for funding opportunities or grants...but one major obstacle is that we can't apply for a lot of grants without public liability insurance. So we are asking you to help us afford our first year of cover...among other things e.g. the cost of our website and reporting fees to Consumer Affairs Victoria.

One grant we are in the process of applying for is to host a Student Food Hub which would supply 100 students every week with enough food for seven days. Running over 40 weeks, this would be 4000 students who would not go hungry! And more importantly, would get healthy and dignified food!

Below is a bit more info about Fed Up!

While the pandemic lockdowns may be over, the issue of student food insecurity remains. Students now face cost of living pressures on low incomes, in addition to high student fees (particularly for international students). With the cost of rent, food and fuel rapidly increasing over the past twelve months, students continue to struggle in accessing healthy and affordable food at a critical and formative time in their life when a nourishing diet is essential to their capacity to learn, focus, grow and develop. Just Food followed the University of Tasmania and University of Melbourne’s lead to conduct research into student wellbeing at William Angliss.

Who is food insecure at William Angliss?
  • Half of students who are 25 years old and under are food insecure
  • Over half (52%) of international students are food insecure

What does food insecurity look like at William Angliss?
  • Close to half (41%) were not happy with the food options on the campus
  • Nearly one in three students (32%) did not have access to culturally appropriate food
  • Fourteen percent of students only have access to very limited kitchens
  • One in four students access free food weekly and 44% of students access free food yearly
  • Students access free food from religious groups, community organisations, food banks, and from their workplaces
