Avondale Community Garden Muncie
Imagine cooking a family dinner. Now imagine cooking a family dinner with fresh produce you picked that day.
This is an experience I have only enjoyed a handful of times, and I will venture to guess there aren't many who have enjoyed many more meals. In such a fast pace world we live in, gardening has lost its importance. This has resulted in many families relying on the grocery store for produce instead of cultivating it within their neighborhoods.
In an attempt to change this very mindset, I have set out to try and gain awareness within my local community. By transforming this empty lot into a community garden, we will enable families to cook with freshly picked produce gardened and harvested by the neighborhood.
I have procured this plot of land, in Muncie, IN, with Avondale Methodist Church, to build a community garden for the local neighborhood to garden and harvest as they please. By allowing the community members to engage in the process of gardening for themselves and their neighborhoods, we will build harmony between neighbors along with a desire to pursue a better diet.
To fully construct this garden, we require $5,000 to fully finish our vision. Major costs include:
-lumber to build garden beds & children's area
-dirt to fill beds
-gardening equipment (hoes, gloves, shovels, etc.)
-shed to store gardening equipment
-barrels to collect rainwater for watering vegetables
-seeds
-tomato cages, polls for green beans
With the success of this garden, we plan on covering many more empty lots in hopes to provide a yearly supply of fresh produce to Avondale; turning neighbors into companions.
