A group of Northwest DC neighbors have come together to help a recently arrived refugee family build a new home here in the United States.
Our group, District Welcomes, is sponsoring a family of 5 from Afghanistan.
They arrived in November under the U.S. government refugee resettlement program in partnership with Lutheran Social Services National Capital Area (LSSNCA). At the end of January, LSSNCA (along with other refugee resettlement programs) lost their ability to provide financial support and key transition services to families who had only recently arrived to the DC area.
LSSNCA has partnered with groups like ours to support these families through Community Sponsorship. As Community Sponsors, we have committed to help this family make their home here in the Washington area. We'll support them in
- maintaining housing
- learning English
- obtaining employment
- navigating our local school systems
- and obtaining services
so they can rebuild their lives and become a permanent part of our community.
We invite you to join us to support this family with all that they need to feel secure, safe, and at home.
Your contributions will help District Welcomes provide this family with the necessary resources to build a new life here in the Washington area.
We thank you in advance for your support of this important work.
While financial contributions are our main goal, we have other ways to help (including donating time, research, and household items). Email us at thedistrictwelcomes at gmail dot com for our sign-up sheet.
To become a Community Sponsor, we went through an application process that was reviewed and vetted by LSSNCA.
