Hi There! I'm Connor Michalek, founder of MindfulMindsets.co - a travel blog dedicated to conscious and intentional travel.
With that said, I'm so excited to dust off the backpack and hit the road again. This time to Uganda with my partner. This trip feels different, though. It’s not just about seeing a new place but about immersing ourselves in a community and contributing in ways that truly leave an impact.
Back in 2019, I spent time in Malawi, and that experience left a lasting impression. We raised funds for farming tools and provided 50 pigs to families affected by HIV, focusing on creating sustainable solutions to improve livelihoods.
What really stuck with me was seeing how small efforts, directed in the right way, could create such a ripple effect in people’s lives. That trip planted the seed for this journey to Uganda -it’s about traveling with intention, listening to local needs, and finding ways to give back.
This time, we’ll be working with Worth A Foundation, an amazing organization based in Kasese, Uganda.
About Worth A Foundation
Worth A Foundation was founded by Masika, a nurse who pours her heart into supporting vulnerable children and families. About ten years ago, Masika saw the struggles of children fleeing wars in the Congo and took action. She created a safe space where they could access food, education, and the chance to build a better future.
Today, Worth A Foundation runs a school for over 250 children, alongside farming and health initiatives for women and girls in the community. Kasese itself is a lively town nestled in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains and serves as a gateway to some of Uganda’s most stunning natural landmarks, like Queen Elizabeth National Park.
What We’ll Be Doing
During our time in Kasese, we’ll dive into several key projects, including:
- Finishing the orphanage: Helping with construction so it can become a safe, permanent home for children.
- Leading programs: I’m especially excited to organize activities like chess, fitness, and health awareness—simple tools that can help students build confidence, collaborate, and grow.
- Supporting sustainable farming: Assisting with banana and maize plantations that provide food for the school and local families.
This work builds on efforts from previous volunteers, adding to the long-term vision of the community to provide stability, education, and health care for those who need it most.
Why We’re Raising Funds
We’re raising funds to support these efforts directly and make the biggest impact while we’re there. Contributions will help with:
- Completing the orphanage construction.
- Providing supplies like chess boards, fitness equipment, and farming tools.
- Improving school infrastructure, including plans for a library and playground.
Having seen how much we accomplished in Malawi, I know how far even small contributions can go when they’re directed thoughtfully.
Why Uganda?
Uganda feels like the perfect next step in my journey of conscious travel. The country is known for its beautiful landscapes, vibrant culture, and the hospitality of the locals.
But what makes this trip truly special is the chance to work alongside Masika and the team at Worth A Foundation. Their commitment to education, health, and empowerment is inspiring, and I’m honored to play even a small part in supporting their vision.
I’ll be sharing updates throughout the trip, including videos so you can see exactly where your contributions are going. Whether you’d like to donate, share this post, or just cheer us on, it all makes a difference. And I can’t thank you enough for being part of this journey.
Let’s make something meaningful together.
